Creating a Healthful Learning Environment
An Educational Seminar
DesBois Tutoring & Enrichment offers an informational presentation, of special interest to school administrators, staff, parents, and homeschooling families, on Creating a Healthful Learning Environment. We bring our collective understanding from over two decades of personal experience with, and academic study of, the principles and practices of Environmental Medicine. This presentation focuses on how to provide a healthful learning environment that meets students' primary needs in order to support optimal physical and cognitive functioning. We give a brief overview of the field of Clinical Ecology/Environmental Medicine, discuss causes and manifestations of environmental illness, identify common school and household toxin sources (from heating fuel, to fragranced cosmetics and cleaning products, to pesticides, to mold, to artificial electromagnetic fields) and their adverse health effects, and offer some alternative products and strategies for creating healthier indoor and outdoor spaces. This practical information is particularly relevant today as we live in an age of childhood chronic illness and declining academic performance. This seminar, which is flexible in length, breadth, and depth, is based on our "Removing Obstacles to Learning" document, found on the Reflections page of our website.
